We have prepared for you a new series, where I will tell more about still a bit mysterious Panchakarma. Enjoy the lecture!
Our teacher, dr Shivani, said once that Ayurveda is like an ocean.
We can chose the way we want to use its wealth. We could walk on a beach with bare feet being close to earth and nature. We might wade in the shallow water, benefitting from the cooling and refreshment that the water gives us. We can swim in the safe distance from the shore, letting the waves rock us and letting go of the burden of everyday life. Dive underneath the surface with diving mask and snorkel, discovering the magic and colors of the underwater world. Dive with the tank deep into the world of more mysteries and much stronger element.
It’s similar with Panchakarma. We can benefit from it in many ways.
Basically, there are two types of therapies. First one, called Sanshamana in Sanskrit, aim at balancing, reducing the dosha that lost the balance. We focus on symptoms and attempt to alleviate them. We also introduce the prophylaxis in order not to create any new symptoms of imbalance. It takes place during a consultation, we set up a diet and discuss the lifestyle with the client.
Second group, called Sansodhana in Sanskrit, the cleansing therapies. Panchakarma is one of them. It is a radical treatment that can heal serious disorders and diseases. Here we focus on eliminating the vitiated doshas from the body. We try to restore what is the essence of health for a person and to get close as much as possible to the ideal health state called Prakriti in Ayurveda.
The Panachakarma comes in a couple of variants
Each of them has its purpose and once we know it we can meet real expectations.
1 – Panchakarma, that helps you maintain the balance and good health. Who is it for? For fit people leading a healthy lifestyle and caring for themselves that want to boost their body once in a while.
2 – Panchakarma, that reduces the symptoms of imbalance. Who is it for? For those who are generally healthy, but suffer from some small afflictions, minor aches and pains. Nothing serious, diagnosed by the doctor with heavy chemicals prescribed. Actually, the doctor doesn’t know what to say at all so says it is stress, suggests to rest more and quit smoking.
3 – Panchakarma, aiming to pacify the dosha that lost control and causes problems. Who is it for? For those, that suffer even though they are on a diet ( or at least they try to be) and try ( try…) to have a healthy lifestyle. They suffer from bloating, constipation, heartburn, headaches, fatigue…Something is wrong and the way they try to fix it does not bring relief.
4 – Panchakarma, that is supposed to cure from a serious sickness. Who is it for? For those who can name their ailment, as with all its symptoms it received a name such as asthma, diabetes, hypertension, cancer… Their condition is advanced and it requires advanced treatment. In order to achieve visible and lasting results, we need more time, discipline and expert knowledge.
I heard many times that Panchakarma treatments differ.
Some decide to go to beautifully situated Kerala, as Kerala is a home of Ayurveda. Actually, not a home but rather a good God Mother. India has chosen that state, not so long ago, to be a place where Ayurveda can be favored and cultivated. The government of India allowed for much more favorable legal and financial conditions there for developing activities related to Ayurveda than in any other part of India.
Panchakarma is practiced slightly different in Kerala. It even has its name: Abhyanga Panchakarma. The main goal is to rejuvenate, regenerate and relax. It does not focus on cleansing and so there is practically no treatment related to insides of the body. What is it then? Massage with use of large amounts of oil and sauna are basic treatments. There is Shirodhara and other forms of pouring oil onto the body, there are massages with use of herbal bolus and powder massages. The diet is more varied, prepared to balance dosha. Hence the stories of tables groaning with the aromatic food.
How we do it ?
Panchakarma, that we perform is a classic form of Panchakarma consisting of five therapies that cleanse the organism from the inside. We come up with an individual plan of Panchakarma for every client. We follow the principle „Primo non nocere”. We take into account all the indications, contraindications, our skills and the possibilities of action.
Panchakarma is the most important healing method offered by Ayurveda.
Its greatest and most valued treasure. It is not an easy procedure. This is why so few people in Poland deal with it. In addition to the specialist knowledge, the relationship established between the patient and therapist is also very important. With this relationship it is possible to talk about subtleties related to emotions, the way we experience the world, what has shaped us and still affects us daily.
Next time I will tell you why Panchakarma is so difficut and why it is worth to do it.
